About
Sumi Pak creates bold and vivid figurative imagery using charcoal, ink wash, and watercolor. Her subjects are often found within her immediate surroundings which evoke beauty and affection, such as nature, family, friends, and her pet cat. The warm and dreamlike emotions are well portrayed in works like the ‘Mother-Daughter’ portrait and the series of watercolor paintings of her cat, ’33 Days of Kopi.’
Sumi was born and raised in South Korea and moved to the Hudson Valley region of New York to attend high school. Separated from family early, Sumi immersed in art-making as a way to understand new surroundings. Her formal education at RISD and the CalArts helped her delve into a process of conveying human emotions through gestures and abstraction. Her early career as a digital colorist in the comic book industry furthered her skill in creating narratives using color. Currently, Sumi splits her time living and working between Hudson Valley and New York City.
